Cholesterol Question: What is a normal level for cholesterol? How high is the heart disease risk for a person with high cholesterol?
Elevated cholesterol levels are certainly a risk factor for vascular disease. Usually a LDL(low density lipoprotein) of greater than 130 is high and over 160 needs treatment. This can be modified somewhat if the HDL (high density lipoprotein) is high. This usually means over 50 and the higher the better. However, other risk factors are very important in determining treatment. For example, a smoking male with a family history of coronary disease will get treated far earlier than a non, smoking female with no family history of vascular disease.
