When it becomes a lot cheaper. That system cost $1.3 billion for 30 km. It doesn’t replace flights, it is a city centre to airport shuttle. To do (say) NY to Washington would cost 15 billion at the same rate, and given the property prices of the land it covered, would probably be a lot more. You can buy a hell of a lot of fuel for that money, The Shanghai Maglev has been criticised as an expensive white elephant.
