EMAP originally stood for East Midlands Allied Press, EMI for Electric and Musical Industries, HMV for His Master’s Voice and WPP (oddly) for Wire and Plastic Products apparently Sir Martin Sorrell chose this wire basket manufacturer as his foundation company for building up the global advertising company we know today.
