Cat Care FAQ:Is It OK to Let Cats Go Outdoors at a New Home? Wednesday May 2, 2007 Springtime seems to be the time of year that our cat Rocky insists upon a daily trek outdoors. He gets pretty insistent about it, but is generally happy if he can have just two or three short visits outside, sometimes, not even leaving the deck, sometimes, just long enough to go roll in the dirt. And we do allow him to do that, as long as he is supervised, of course, since he’s been an indoor/outdoor cat for as long as we’ve known him. It seems cruel to us to forbid him this simple pleasure, as long as one of us is keeping an eye on him and knows where he is. He’s an older cat, so the outdoors adventures are very limited, and he’s content with that. At this point, I’m beginning to feel that it’s mostly just ceremonial; a matter of dignity for an ageing kitty. However, not all cat owners agree that this is a good idea. If you’re not sure
