Carburetor rebuild or replace?
(Portions from: Jeff Liebermann.) Rebuilding works 98% of the time on chain saws or lawn mowers. However, I’m zero for 5 attempts on automobile carburetors. After 5 disasters, I gave up. What to look for to determine if replacement is needed. And then it doesn’t necessarily mean the entire carb needs to be replaced, only the bad parts: • Missing parts. • Broken parts. • Brass needle valve with a circular grove and a matching grove in the seat. • Clogged intake to the cylinder. • Clogged fuel line. • Clogged fuel filter. • Clogged air filter. • Debris in the carb after the air filter was punctured. • Wrong fuel or bad fuel/oil mix. • Far too much Sta-Bil in the fuel. • Water in everything. • Mangled throttle linkage. • Automagic choke stuck either open or closed. • Timing adjustment on magneto position. And the winner that took me several days to find: • Permanently shorted cutoff switch. 🙁 Running swill like Arco gas through it will certainly cause any soft parts to degrade and need r
