Car with Automatic gear – can I shift the gear from S to D while driving?
Even with it in D, it automatically starts in S, usually. Some vehicles, when in D, will start in second unless you floorboard it and it shift down to first. Its perfectly find to start in S and move to D while driving. The reason they don’t put just D is so that you can force downshift which will help slow you down if you are going down hill. That helps save your brakes. In my truck, if I put it in second, it will start in second instead of first which helps to keep from spinning out when taking off on an icy road. Some people will tell you that messing with the shifter while driving an automatic is bad for the transmission. Really, if you weren’t supposed to use it, then why would they put it there. They have safety features now that won’t let the transmission go into the gear you put it in if it will hurt it, so even if you try to do something that will break it, it won’t allow it.
