Car Radiator problems?

Well my car (1996 subaru legacy outback) just started over heating last night, it was after i got done my be using the car a little to rough but this morining i took the radiator cap off and ran the car and i had it on before while running and it would over heat so i fill the coolant then desided to just take the cap off the radiator and while off i turned the car on and it ran without over heating i have no idea whats wrong with the bleeding i dont know if its a good idea to drive around with the cap off any help would be great thanks. A: It sounds like the thermostat.
