Can’t we just build renewable energy to equal the output of STP Units 3 and 4?
The number of wind turbines necessary to equal the 2,700-MW output of STP Units 3 and 4 at the time of summer peak electrical use would be almost 21,000 turbines covering 300 square miles, an area about half the size of the City of San Antonio. Given the current cost and effectiveness of solar photovoltaic collectors, it would take more than 8.5 million 2-kilowatt rooftop solar collectors representing an investment of more than $130 billion to equal the annual energy output of STP Units 3 and 4. It would require a space of more than 21,000 acres to accommodate this solar field.
