Com3 is a legacy (old) device. You will see either a 9 or a 25 pin female connector on your computer. USB is a newer technology. I bought a Serial to USB cable that lets me plug legacy devices into a USB port. However a software driver came with the cable which makes the USB port visible as a COM port and that is what you are looking for.
