if you have large size of your external hard drive (above 80GB) sometime you need to be patient (several minutes though) until you computer recognize it (plug in or out), i have 250GB external HD, sometimes i have to waiy about 5 minutes until it safe to remove, and also when i plug in(depend on your CPU specz too)

If it’s a brand new external drive, you may need to format it with the disk that came in the box. If it’s an old hard drive, it may be toast.
