Candidates don’t have to say anything in Parts 1 and 2 of the test. How can examiners assess their speaking?
A. Parts 1 and 2 are designed to test a candidate’s receptive skills. They also provide a gentle introduction to what for many candidates may be their first experience of a test of spoken English. The candidate’s productive skills are tested in Parts 3, 4 and 5 – although, even here, only short answers to questions are expected.
