CAN ZONE 2 OR ZONE 3 CLAIM THE IHSAS 30TH REGION?
It seemed throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s that rarely a year passed without the IHSA growing by another region. As recently as Spring of 1999 the organization was made up of 23 regions. Starting this month, the IHSA grows a thirtieth region, the first new region created since mid-2002, with Zone 2 becoming the fourth zone currently with four regions. However the new region in Zone 2 is actually made up of nearly the same schools that were known as Zone 3, Region 1 last season. Save for the arrival of Columbia and New York University (which both head east from Zone 2, Region 1), the Long Island and Southwestern Connecticut schools will see their region change in name only. And save for perhaps having to compete once or twice a year in New Jersey, nothing will look all that different for the likes of Fairfield, Stony Brook, Yale and eight others, at least through Regionals in early April.
