Research is being done to try to unlock the secrets as to why the zebrafish can regenerate their hair cells since humans cannot. The hair cells on the fish work very similarly to hair cells in the human ear. Currently, hearing loss due to damaged hair cells in the human ear is permanent.

So far, scientists have identified a developmental protein that appears to be turned on in animals, like the fish, who can regenerate hair cells. Scientists are hoping to make a drug from this protein to help humans with hearing loss.
