Can you use the Nintendo DS US Charger in the UK (England) with simply a plug adapter?

I bought a DS in the US, brought it back to the UK, plugged it into our mains with an adapter and it didn’t work at all! I’m not sure if that was because there was a problem with the voltage or if I simply had a dud charger though. However, when I went into Dixons to buy a new charger and explained my problem I was told by the sales guy that he had heard stories of the UK voltage essentially blowing the DS up. Admittedly he could have been trying to ensure that I bought a charger from him, but I ended up getting one from ebay for about a fiver and I’d much rather spend that than risking my DS going up in smoke!
