Can you use 220-240 volt appliances in countries where the voltage is 110-120 volts ?
I have experience with appliances with 110/120V as well as 220/240V ratings, working in countries with a different rating. (i.e. 110V in a country with 220 Voltage and vice versa). The transformer/ adapter/ converter as they may be called increases or decreases the voltage to the voltage required by the appliance. If you do not use one, the appliance will most likely get damaged. Things like, light bulb, resistance heater (Electric Iron) etc. may work, but with very low capacity. In most cases the frequency generally does not matter. Most of the manufacturers of appliances seem to take care of this in the design. In any case it does not damage the appliance. I had an alarm clock which worked very well in both the frequencies, after I added the converter (no – it was not a quartz crystal based one but a frequency driven one); except that the time kept fluctuating (faster some times slower at other times) as the supply frequency was fluctuating too in the country where I used it.
