The Golden Nugget is the best hotel downtown by miles and whilst the oters are cheaper they are not comparable which is why the Nugget is more expensive. If you need to stay downtown I would consider Main Stret Station and then Binions but neither are anything like the nugget. You can however get a great deal on the Strip for that period with rooms at Excalibur from $29 and suites at MGM from $75 but you need to book quickly as some of these offers end this week ! http://vegasuncovered.wordpress.

Why dont you try either Circus Circus or the Riviera on the strip, I have stayed at both these places and never had a problem, although not as nice as the Golden Nugget thet are both definitely cheaper.
