anyone doing anything with fusion these days has at least a graduate degree majoring in plasma physics. Typically they have their PhD and also post-doc experience as well. Sometimes, but not often, you can get a post-doc internship with places doing research on fusion technology, but even if you get general plasma physics research experience, it will help you towards the later goal of getting into fusion. Of course, this is determining whether or not you want to work on designing new reactor technology. Having a bit of a chemistry background, and perhaps some particle physics in there wouldn’t hurt with understanding waste issues. Not to mention an environmental science course or two. In terms of employment, it just depends on what you’re willing to do and what’s available. Most nuclear employment opportunities deal with fission, and tend to be directed at maintenance rather than research.
