Can you sub. vegtable oil with canola oil?

Canola oil is a much better substitute for vegtable oil than butter is. Canola oil is actually a type of vegtable oil, so technically, it isn’t a substitute at all!

Vegetable oil, canola oil and corn oil are used alternately. Peanut oil and sesame oil have strong flavors which could affect the recipe.

In most cases the vegetable oil will be better than the Canola oil. Canola tends to have a fishy taste to some people and is best used in recipes that have a lot of spices to mask the flavor of the oil. Google Rapeseed which is what Canola oil is made from. Almost all of it comes from Canada.

Yes you can go use canola oil. In fact it’s better and healthier than the vegetable oil. I suggest not using butter as a substitute for vegetable oil, especially when cooking or baking certain things. Butter makes for a different texture than the oil. In fact, if you don’t have any oil, you can even substitute the oil for pureed fruit (eg. applesauce) and tastes great and is even healthier than oil altogether. **Tip: if you are planning on sauteeing with oil, then it might be an idea to add a little tiny bit of butter with the oil and it prevents the oil from burning too quickly. Gives a nice flavour too and cuts the need for so much butter.
