Jean Piaget (1896-1980) is renowned for proposing a psychological theory that depicts the development of abstract rational thought. Many students of Piaget’s work were therefore greatly surprised when it became public knowledge that Piaget himself had been psychoanalysed as a young man. Piaget’s psychoanalysis, first mentioned in a footnote to the Freud/Jung Letters(McGuire, 1974), was discovered serendipitously. In 1972, while editing this correspondence, William McGuire asked Piaget for information on Sabina Spielrein, who had been the subject of several letters between Freud and Jung and had spent some time in Geneva. Piaget responded that he knew ‘Madame Sabine [sic] Spielrein’ well and that he had done his ‘psychanalyse didactique’ with her. A few years later, Piaget offered his interviewer Jean-Claude Bringuier (1977) some details about his analysis.
