Can you please tell me anything about Hannah Thomas, who was the woman keeper at Gurnet Point (Plymouth Light), Massachusetts?
John and Hannah Thomas owned the land where the government built Plymouth Light, also known as the Gurnet Light. Apparently John Thomas was named the first keeper as part of the agreement with the government. John Thomas became a general in the American Revolution. After his death, his wife Hannah Thomas became America’s first woman lighthouse keeper. She was there at least until 1790 when Massachusetts ceded the lighthouse to the federal government. In 1790 Hannah Thomas was receiving a salary of 200 dollars per year, plus five shillings for the use of the lighthouse property. Her son John Thomas helped with the lighthouse duties, and he eventually became keeper himself, staying until 1812.
