You must have some form of health / or medical insurance if you are injured on the field. When I was playing my mother had medical insurance on me. However, she did pay for the medical insurance provided by the school district for athletes (just in case). It was not that expensive (and still is not in most cases) and it just pertains to any accidents that happen on the field, track, practice, etc. during the course of the competitive events or sanctioned preparation for them. It really more like accident insurance that pertains to your medical…like if you are hurt (break a leg, arm, dislocate a shoulder) or become ill (hospitalized due to dehydration, asthma attack at track meet, etc.) associated with the sport you are playing.
