Yes you can and it even upscales the standard DVDs to look slightly better if you connect the 360 by the HDMI cable to a HD-Ready TV, it can’t play HD DVDs though unless you were to purchase the now defunct HD DVD drive add-on from somewhere like eBay or somewhere that still has them Simple answer is YES it can play standard DVDs
