You need to check the local small business requirements for your city and state; usually a good place to start is at your City government center at the business license desk. They will be able to let you know what is required to begin your small business and refer you to other local and state entities that can help you develop a good business plan.
As far as having a braiding certification, that will certainly help because you wouldn’t have to hire someone right away and be responsible for all the paperwork that comes with having employees. But if business gets too busy, then you would need to check into the requirements for having people work for you, too.
Your local Better Business Bureau may be able to help you find classes or seminars that you can take to learn about all the right steps to make sure you get your business off and running the right way. Go talk to people that have braiding shops and ask questions that you want to know about running one. Make sure you ask them what they like about being in the business, and what they don’t like about being in the business. It will give you some terrific insight for things you hadn’t even thought of!
