Interestingly, only one of those four went on to become a Hall of Famer – Jim Palmer. 1971 was Palmer’s second of eight 20 win seasons, in what would be a very illustrious career. 1971 was Mike Cuellar’s third 20-win season. He would go on to win 20 games in the season once more after that, in 1974. Although he won 185 games in his career and posted a .587 winning percentage, he did not receive a single vote for the Hall of Fame when he became eligible. Pat Dobson was perhaps the most surprising out of the whole group. Before 1971, he had never had a winning season and he had never won more than 14 games in a season. He would never win 20 games again, although he did win 19 in 1974. He finished his career with 122 wins and 129 losses, so a 20 win season from him would have seemed very unlikely.
