Can you name a father on a birth certificate in the UK without his consent?
This situation has recently arisen in my family, and I have looked into the legal side of it. You can also Google the site of the Registrar General, which is quite interesting on birth registration. If parents are married, mother can register baby on her own, and name husband as father. If they are not married, father has to go with mother when registering, to be named. He can also go with mother at later date to be added to the register, but I think there is a time limit (6 months?). Register has to be amended at later date if parents marry. If father named he gets equal parental rights with mother automatically. The only way otherwise he can get this is to take mother to court. If mother has refused his requests for this to happen, court will be sympathetic. In our particular case, father is a high earner, and thinks mother can get more state benefit, so he refused to go and be named.
