Can you list the capital cities of the US in alphabetical order?
Well, yes, it’s entirely true that the average American cannot list the capital cities of each of our 50 US States in alphabetical order off the top of our heads. There’s really no practical reason to know this. I can’t, and I’ve visited the vast majority of them. Ask me a state, and I can give you its capital city with no problem. Really, why would anyone want to be able to list the capital cities? There’s not really any need to. Listing the states might be mildly useful, just from being able to remember them offhand; I’ve had some purposes for this. However, for capitals, there’s never been any need to list them. If I need to know a capital, I know it. Quite honestly, I’m sick and tired of the “the average American can’t [insert unnecessary activity here]” statements. It’s simply an unfair way of portraying Americans as stupid, which seems to be all the rage these days.
