Modern additions (20th century onwards) would include cable-driven controls, rim/compression brakes, derailleur gearing (or epicyclic gearing), pawl-and-ratchet freewheel mechanism, piston/spring suspension, and more complex inventions like Burrows four-bar suspension linkages.
