An employer has duties under the 2005 Safety Health and Welfare at Work (SHAWW) Act and its Regulations, including in particular the SHAWW (General Application) Regulations of 2007. The Act and its Regulations do not specifically mention a requirement for an employer to have a ‘main distribution single line diagram’ for the premises. However, an employer must comply with (and be able to demonstrate compliance with) the statutory requirements. ETCI’s Guide to ‘The Management of Electrical Safety at Work ET206’ in its first Management Alert indicates that ‘the starting point for understanding the scope of your responsibility (as an employer) is to have current copies of the Layout Schematic and Single Line Diagram. This Guide was prepared in 2000 and reflected what was required under the 1993 General Application Regulations. It is now being updated to reflect the requirements of the 2007 Regulations.
