Most dried beans are fine for planting; read the package and make sure they haven’t been parboiled (which is becoming more common these days), soaked with lime, or pre-seasoned. Generally the cheaper brands are fine. Climate is equally important because most varieties of bean won’t grow as well in very humid areas (such as Mississippi or Alabama) as they do in semi-arid areas (such as Arizona or Alberta). They like warmth but don’t need intense heat, and although they like water, too much will rot the roots. That “too much” may be a normal amount of rainfall in some areas of the US southeast. Pintos are especially suited to growing in semi-arid climates, while black-eyed peas (as well as soybeans) can tolerate moisture much better. One hint: if you do plant beans this year, don’t plant them in the same place next year.
