I can’t tell you specifically about AU, but generally standby tickets are a thing of the past. This is in part due to security concerns. Bags are not allowed to travel without passengers, so they must be pulled if they don’t make it. In addition, it is a security risk to have herds of people waiting for hours or days for flights they may not make. People tend to get frustrated and belligerent when they don’t make flight after flight. On some airlines, passengers ticketed on another flight may be able to standby for an earlier or later flight in certain circumstances but usually standby is reserved for airline staff and their families, who are held to strict standards of conduct while traveling in this manner.
