Because the Roman Catholic Church condemns pre-marital sex. In fact, any sex outside of a sanctioned marriage is condemned. 80% or so of the Philippine population adhere to Christianity and at least more than half of those Christians adhere to Rome and the Pope. Thus, pre-marital sex is considered a taboo.

That’s no longer true. Not in modern times. Pre-marital sex and extra-marital sex is pretty much rampant in the Philippines particularly since there is no divorce. Been there done that.
