December 12, 2012 is the winter solstice. That’s when the Earth is pointing most away from the sun in the Northern hemisphere. It’s the far-right position of the earth in this diagram: (as you can see, the Earth always points in the same direction, exactly like a gyroscope, but since it’s at an angle, sometimes the top half points toward the sun [summer] and sometimes away [winter]). That happens once a year. The sun will also be on the “galactic equator”; that is, the center-line of the galaxy. It’s basically a line down the center of the Milky Way, like this: That doesn’t happen every year. The earth is wobbling, very slowly, which causes the sun to move up and down relative to this line every 26,000 years or so. Right now it’s particularly close. The Mayans knew it would be that close, and in fact they based their whole calendar on it.
