Kayfabe is dead because the fans don’t pretend that invisible wall still exists. The WWE (especially) still presents their storylines and matches as if everything were real (like actors and directors of movies) but they don’t pretend to think that anybody actually believes it is anything but fiction. The WWE still produces their shows in a Kayfabe fashion, but the “smoke and mirrors” are gone; they know we know it’s all ‘scripted”, they just don’t let on (to us, the fans) that they know. They still want us to play along with the “scripts” and believe (or at least, pretend) that everything we see during their shows is real.
