A mercurial barometer uses an inverted tube (often a glass tube) filled with liquid mercury to detect changes in air pressure. An aneroid barometer uses a sealed but flexible can filled with air to detect changes in air pressure. An altimeter is much like an aneroid barometer except that it is calibrated so that instead of reading barometric pressure it reads altitude.
