Can you drink alcohol while taking coumadin?
Coumadin is a very sensitive drug- that is, it is affected by many outside influences. Ethanol (drinking alcohol), not only increases the risk of stomach bleeding while on coumadin, but it also increases or decreases the metabolism of coumadin, leading to a very dangerous increase or decrease in coumadin blood levels. Unless you know EXACTLY how ethanol works on your individual liver enzymes, drinking alcohol while on coumadin is not recommended.
