You should search around on the internet for the exact type and price you like. I don’t think there is a ‘best’ brand, both have their specific pros and cons as you say. So, don’t believe anyone who says that ‘ Sony is best’ or ‘Canon is best’. It doesn’t work like that. I know, because I have both. I have a Canon analog and digital camera that are more professional (think Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi , and can definitely recommend that if you want to take more than some holiday snapshots. I chose this one because of its versality, the wide range of available lenses, and the picture quality. Further, I can re-use the lenses I already had for my analog camera (also Canon). The things that I think Canon can do better are : 1- better pictures in low light conditions, there are different models in both brands, so I think the best thing you can do is before u buy you, take low light picture with both cameras, and then compare. 2- What I hate about the sony also is their propriety storage card, while all the other cameras use the SD, sony uses the MMS i think, this would mean that it will not be compatable with most of the devices that come with storage card readers, like ur phone or laptop, because they all use SD.

I went with the Canon (the SD800IS) for several reasons: – the Canon’s lens is a rather unique (for an ultracompact) 3.8x optical zoom wide-angle lens that’s great for indoor group shots – the Canon uses Secure Digital memory cards versus Sony’s proprietary Memory Stick. My experience has been that Memory Sticks tend to be more expensive than Secure Digital, although at the current price levels (~$20/Gb) the difference isn’
