Can you deduct cosmetic surgery costs on income tax?

If the medically necessary part of the procedure can be split out from the cosmetic part (ask your doc if he can do this) then the medically necessary part could be deducted if you meet the other rules to deduct medical expenses (you itemize, and deduct only the portion that’s over 7.5% of your income). Cosmetic surgery is not deductible on your tax return.

Cosmetic/reconstructive surgery can be deducted in limited cases. In your situation, the costs to correct a defect to allow you to breathe properly would be deductable. However, the portion of the surgery to improve the appearance of the nose would not be deductable.

Cosmetic surgery isn’t deductible. If the insurance wouldn’t cover it, neither will the IRS.
