Butter cream icing is a frosting. In the US what we call butter cream is just frosting. A true butter cream, Italian or French is made with a hot sugar syrup as well as egg whites. The frosting that we typically use made of butter or shortening and powdered sugar and flavoring is what is in the containers. Although the containers contain artificial flavors, colors as well as shortening that is not as “healthy” as butter. But yes you can use the tub of frosting under the fondant. I saw a show just recently where the cakes looked like fondant was used but in reality butter cream frosting was used then a fine cloth was used to pat down the frosting giving it a soft smooth look. I just may have to try that technique next time I make a cake.
