In like a camping situation? You sure can! I’ve used a coffee can as a frying pan once. My friend poked holes in the sides to allow for the fire to breath and we cooked small venison steaks on the bottom of the can (the can was upside down). Despite other answers the can will NOT melt down. The water boils at 212 degrees F. and this prevents the can itself from getting much hotter than that. Basically the water keeps the can cool. Just use caution. A can is not very big and does not give the water much room for the dynamics of boiling and may spill over and burn you, or put out the fire. Maybe in this situation use a coffee can which is bigger. The paint from the outside of the can may initially release some fumes but the fumes will not and can not get inside the can to contaminate the food.
