Can Yeast Infection Get in the Mouth?
There is a type of yeast infection that affects the mouth, which is called oral thrush. Yeast spores need moist, warm climates to multiply in and so the mouth is an ideal climate in which yeast can thrive. Oral thrush mainly affects babies, the elderly and those people who have low immune systems, and it can normally be treated easily and quickly with anti-fungal medication. Diet also plays a large part in the development of yeast infections. A poor diet can prevent the immune system from functioning properly, making the bodily vulnerable to all kinds of infections. A host of ‘friendly’ bacteria live in our bodies and help prevent and control the growth of yeast spores, but they require certain nutrients to survive. Yeast thrives on glucose, so a diet high in sugary foods and low in fresh fruits and vegetables means that the yeast spores soon overwhelm the bacteria that contain them and start spreading out of control.
