Can We Trust Senator Arlen Specter To Treat Bush Nominees Fairly?
Judge Bork was viciously demonized by radical leftist groups like People for the American Way (PFAW). In fact, the level of hatred directed against Bork was so unique in our recent history that a new word was coined to describe such treatment: “Borking.” Unfortunately, it wasn’t just Senator Ted Kennedy or PFAW that destroyed the chances of Robert Bork to serve with dignity on the Supreme Court. It was also Senator Arlen Specter, a so-called “moderate” Republican. He bragged to the editors of the Pennsylvania Bucks County Courier Times in October: “I not only voted against Bork, I led the charge against him.” Specter should be ashamed of blocking this fine judge to the Supreme Court. The trashing of Robert Bork became a model of how liberals routinely smear and destroy the reputations of any judicial nominee who believes in interpreting, not creating law while serving on the bench.
