Most times the insurance comapny and the DMV wants to see that the primary named insured on the policy matches the name the veh is registered to. So, as long as the car stays registered to your family member who owns the insurance policy you should have no problem just transferring the title. They don’t care as much about the title as they do the registration.
A title shows who is the owner(s) of the vehicle, not who is the primary or secondary driver(s) are. If you are having the title transferred to your name, it would be best for you to be on the insurance policy also. In Florida, if a title owner does not show proof of he/she being insured, a notice is sent by the DMV of the possibility of losing your drivers license. Even if not the primary driver, as the titled owner you are responsible for that vehicle and in the case of an accident, you could be sued (depending upon the circumstances of the accident).
