Can we seed a lawn with grass similar to St. Augustine?
Q: We would like to grow St. Augustine at our new Conroe home, but I don’t want to buy numerous pallets due to cost. Is there seed for a similar grass? — W.H., Conroe A: St. Augustine is only established by sodding or sprigging. It grows in full sun and has the highest tolerance of shade of the warm-season turf grasses we grow. You can sow common and some improved varieties of Bermuda. These have a much finer blade that St. Augustine. Bermuda does not tolerate shade. You could sow centipede, but it will take at least three weeks to germinate and then it is slow growing. It’s best sodded. Whether you sod or sow, prepare your soil for best results. Clean the area. Make sure drainage is good. Run a soil test, and add needed nutrients based on the test. Rake or till to prepare the soil for planting. See Home Lawns @ AggieTurf.
