From listening and reading I believe that Bin Laden advisedly chose a war in Afghanistan. He thought that was the place to make a stand because he felt it would accomplish his aims. He decided to strike the twin towers because he wanted to draw us into a war, and he wanted that war to occur in Afghanistan because 1) He had the Taliban as an ally, and 2) the USSR had tried to subjugate the Afghan people and got bogged down in an un-winnable war that extended over 10 years. Bin Laden wanted to draw the country into such a war to bleed this country economically and accomplish the other things outlined in your question. Initially his plan failed. The U.S. went to Afghanistan after 9/11/01, and the Taliban folded. The U.S. was on its way to a quick and easy military victory, and we had the support of the world community in invading Afghanistan.
