You’ve got to buy a backward compatible ps3 in order to play ps2 games. some contain the ps2 gpu, and some contain the ps2 cpu as well. Those are necessary in order for the ps3 to emulate a ps2. It is not possible to make a ps3 emulate ps2 games without that ps2 hardware. It is also not possible to install the chips yourself, and make the ps3 firmware use them to emulate a ps2. There are as of yet no working ps3 mods of any useful kind, though I’ve heard a few rumors. Whether there’s a mod is a moot point though, you can rest assured that having a mod done, if and when there’s one available, will get your ps3 banned from the playstation network and from firmware use. If mods become available, the firmware will simply be updated to scan for them, and when they detect them, the modded ps3’s mac address and other identifying info will be recorded, it will be accordingly banned from psn and firmware use, and the firmware will then disable itself.
