Unlike other protocols which are defined for just a single type of media, IP can run on top of any of these technologies and can provide connectivity between devices that are on two different types of networks. And this can be done without the use of complex gateways, when so desired, although IP also leaves the option of using gateway-based or proxy-based application models (as is the case with the widely used Network Address Translation systems, firewall systems, and web front-end systems on the Internet).
