Can we have a resident parking scheme to stop commuters/railway station users etc parking in our street?
We will consider requests for residents parking schemes in areas where parking creates a problem, however parking issues will not necessarily be considered without also considering other transport issues such as cycling, walking or passenger transport. Overall, schemes must pay for themselves. Enforcement is the key issue (schemes will fail without it) and under present arrangements we must pay the police to employ extra traffic wardens. Without income from on-street pay-and-display to subsidise this cost the residents’ permits will cost at least £100 pa (rather than about £30) and in practice this will cause a majority of residents to oppose. The County Council plans to take over the enforcement role from the Police (known as ‘decriminalised parking enforcement’) on a district by district basis over the next five years and in the long term this will give us greater flexibility to take action.
