Can we buy overseas lotteries in Australia? Is it illegal or legal?
You wouldn’t have to pay tax on lotto winnings in Australia because our income tax system is not concerned with windfall gains. However, if you received your winnings as a regular payment of installments instead of a lump sum, it would be taxable earnings in Australia. But I don’t know anything about whether it is is legal or possible to actually enter or win an overseas lotto. I have never played lotto in my life – I don’t even gamble on anything – I despise gambling so much that I refuse to place a bet on the Melbourne Cup every year at work and they all think I am weird! I won’t even let my superannuation funds be invested on the share market.
