Can Video Games Teach Us To Drive?
I was playing a video game with my kids over the weekend and it got me thinking about a subject that I’d not considered before. We were playing a popular driving game on the Nintendo Wii and it’s fair to say that I was definitely losing! My kids seemed to learn how to play the game a lot quicker than I did. I was soon losing races on a regular basis and I simply couldn’t compete. Given that I drive in real life and that they are too young to do so, it got me thinking about how realistic video games are. Is driving a video game car anything like the real thing? It’s clear that there are differences, particularly in terms of the controls. The handling of the cars may also be different. It seems to me that the steering feels lighter on most racing games. There’s also the whole issue of hazards. In video games, these are often harmless.
