Can vaccines cause distemper?
It is possible for some of the disease syndromes commonly attributed to wild-type, infectious distemper virus to occur when animals are given certain virulent strains of live distemper virus vaccine. It is a rarity and generally only occurs when live vaccines are given inappropriately (e.g. given to pregnant bitches, underage puppies, immune suppressed animals or to animals harbouring other diseases, such as parvo). Vaccine-associated distemper may also occasionally occur when certain susceptible breeds and lines of dog (e.g. certain lines of Weimaraners) are given certain strains of live distemper vaccine.
